But anyway that's the latest news from the Garden.
In which I hope to bring some sense of edification through entertainment
Its been unseasonably wet this August, which has been a blessing with all the traveling we've been doing. Even though I have been beyond negligent towards all my garden beds, they are still producing! The only vegetable that has been less than satisfactory in its production are the tomatoes, but I think that's because our neighbors with whom we share the garden got the good ones first while we were in Chicago. But the fennel is producing tall feather stalks and huge juicy bulbs at the center, the basil is bushy and sending out thousands of the tender, aromatic leaves, the jalapenos are exploding with their little peppers that will be turned into delicious queso, and my one lonely squash plant has given me about 6 acorn squashes before shriveling up and surrendering to the pumpkin vines. I pulled the last three turnips and am thinking I'll make a big pot of veggie soup to give to friends (pretty sure if Kyle didn't call one of our friends to come 'hang out' so we can feed him on a consistent basis he'd starve) and then make a tomato-squash soup. As I said I really don't care for acorn squash - it was a volunteer from the compost pile from one squash I threw out last fall from the Veggie Box - but my aversion to wasting is greater than my aversion to acorn squash at this point. So I'm just gonna try to disguise it reeeeeally really well. In other news, the gourd plants have also been loving all this wet weather. Observe: Ayup. That puppy is growing onto our roof!!! Now here's the irritating thing about this plant: THERE ARE NO GOURDS ON IT!!!! Its covered in flowers but they simply shrivel up and die!! The vines are going crazy - we set up a stick tepee to extend the banister of the back porch and its disappeared under all the vines within a week - but there's no actual gourds on it. There are two gourds growing on the vine on the chain-link-fence, but just two. They are growing big and gorgeous, so they'll be fun to play with during the winter to see what I can turn them into. However I was kind of wishing I'd have more produce after all this showiness!!! My husband and I are trying to decide if we should cut down the back porch vine since its not producing anything... See we're torn. Its impressive and awesome to look at... but its grown over the back door while we were gone and we had to cut our way back into the house... so its kind of ridiculous... but we also feel kind of like we're living a Grimm's fairy tale by leaving it up.... But anyway that's the latest news from the Garden.
